The club is excited to announce the appointment of former Tongan International David Palu as the 1st Grade Backs Coach for 2022. Boasting 14 Test caps, David was a member of the Tonga squad for the 2003 RWC.

From Wellington originally and primarily a halfback or flyhalf, David featured in the Hurricanes Development squad and played NPC for Manawatu before traveling the world playing rugby in the USA, England, Spain and Romania.

After arriving in Melbourne, David has been coaching junior rugby with his own children and for the last two years he has been assisting the rejuvenated Seniors program at the Wyndham Rhinos. David is a member of the Rebels Junior Academy coaching team and was appointed Assistant Coach of the Senior Victorian Axemen team for 2021.

Club Coaching Director Ruhan van Zyl had this to say about David’s appointment.

“It is great to be able to get someone of David’s calibre and experience to join the club’s coaching team and I am really looking forward to the positive influence and fresh ideas David can add to the club.”

With his appointment David shared:

“The opportunity to coach a prestigious club in Melbourne like Harlequins became available and I had to take it for the new challenges it posed, the development of my own coaching and the chance to share my experiences to the players to bring the best out in them. I am looking forward to working with the coaching and playing group at Harlequins, and building on the culture that past and present players have already created.”
