For the first time since 1998 the club has won the VRU Club Championship – the Cowper Shield, for the most club championship points across all junior and senior grades. The object of the Cowper Shield award is to encourage Clubs to recruit and field as many teams as possible, with the ultimate goal of growing the game within Victoria. The award is decided at the end of the home and away season and is awarded to the Club that has received the most championship points.
We finished 77 points clear of the Melbourne Unicorns who have held the top spot for the last six years.
Wayne Rudland Harlequin President acknowledged the fantastic result for the Club,
“This is a wonderful reward for the significant contribution many have made over the last few years to our on-field and off-field growth. It is an award that has alluded us since 1998 although it has always been in our sights. Much credit goes to those who seeded and then executed on plans as far back as five years ago to grow our junior programs whilst at the same time strengthening our senior performance; it’s their reward for which we are very grateful”.
