16th Dec 2015
In March this year, we were all rocked by the injury sustained by Maciu Vosa. Most of us had never encountered an injury of this seriousness before. From that very moment, we have come to truly understand the strength and spirit of the Rugby Family as we have banded together to support one of our own. We have also been humbled by the generosity that has sprung from the broader community as well as from families, friends and colleagues.
In the last nine months a lot has been achieved. In the early days, we rallied around Maciu, Kylie and their two children, Ezekia and Ari. We soon realised that this was going to require a significant, coordinated and focused effort to provide the support that Maciu and his family would need: not just in the short term, but for the rest of his life.
Following a lot of work by the Harlequin Committee and many others in the Club, a Trust Fund has been established and a Working Group has been formed to undertake the fundraising role as well as to support Maciu and his family. Information about the Trustees and Working Group members and our work is described in The Maciu Vosa Trust Strategic Plan. The Plan is guided by our vision for A life well lived. Our hopes are:
- for Maciu to not be defined by his injury,
- for Maciu and his family to live as normal a life as possible, and
- for a meaningful life for Maciu, where he is able to actively participate as a husband, father, friend, colleague and member of the community.
With the help of our incredible community of supporters and working in partnership with Maciu and his family, we are confident that we can achieve the ambitious goals we have set.
Many donations and offers of support have come in over the course of the year and a number of fundraising events and activities have been organised, which has allowed everyone to get behind Maciu. From the members of the Trust Committee and the Working Group, and on behalf of Maciu and his family, we would like to thank all of you for your kindness and support over the past nine months. The generosity and good wishes that have come from all corners of the world has been amazing and completely uplifting. It is a credit to each and every one of you and is a true reflection of the Rugby Community and of the broader community of support that has rallied around Maciu and his family.
As we close out 2015 and look ahead to 2016, we have been reflecting on what has been achieved to date: from supporting Maciu, to fundraising events, to minor house modifications to allow Maciu to spend Christmas at home surrounded by his family and much, much more. A great deal has been achieved and, thanks to your support, we are now over a quarter of the way towards the fundraising target of $1 million to cover the many and substantial expenses associated with Maciu’s recovery and daily life post-accident. That is a great start, but there is much more still to be done. This includes raising funds for:
- a vehicle which will allow Maciu to move around the community,
- a new fully wheel-chair accessible house, and
- other medical treatments and accessories so that Maciu can make the best possible recovery he can.
We also hope to provide Maciu access to new skills and support to allow him to inspire others through his journey.
We look forward to keeping you up to date with key activities, events and, of course, updates on Maciu’s progress over time. After the incredible success of our Gala Dinner at the RACV Club in July this year, we have decided to make it an annual event. We will send out a save the date early in the new year and hope to see you there.
In the meantime, if you wish to get in contact with us, please call Pete Dawson on 0406 077 928, or send an email to 4MattyCommittee@quins.com.au.
Finally, please read the update on Maciu’s progress: he has come such a long way since March. We once again want to thank you for your wonderful support and generosity in 2015 and look forward to catching up with you again in 2016. We wish you a safe and relaxing Christmas with your family and friends.
