1st and 2nd Grade Grand Final Bound
5th Aug 2015
Quins have won through to their 3rd successive 1st Grade Grand Final, and their 5th consecutive 2nd Grade Grand Final with wins over Box Hill in both Grades.
The 1st Grade game was quite a testy affair, with neither team backing down in a number of heated exchanges on the field throughout the game. Box Hill had a dream start with a try in the first five minutes of play though Quins hit back quickly to make it 7-7 through fullback Justin Marsters 20th try of the season. Quins just couldn’t seem to find their rhythm with numerous dropped balls, poor restarts and errors breaking down the play and Hill played on this to jump out to a 7-17 lead by the thirty minute mark of the 1st half. Things started to come together in the back end of the first half to see Murray Douglas and Kelu Veale cross over for Quins to see the team take, what some might say an undeserved 19-17 lead a the half time break.
The second half started the same as the first; a poor Quins restart that led to an early Box Hill try, but that was nearly the last time Box Hill saw Quins half as Quins dominated the rest of the game with their strong scrum, solid lineout and the passes started to stick to see Quins score another three tries as the teams composure and structure saw a 36-22 triumph and a Grand Final berth.
2nd Grade booked their Grand Final spot with a comprehensive 30-0 win over Box Hill, a team they only defeated 3-0 in the last time they met. With a 9-0 lead at the half, Quins kept Box Hill pinned in their own half for much of the game and once the first try came the flood gates opened to see the team take a handy lead.
3rd Grade were unsettled early by a bad head clash that saw two players leave the field and another leave with a calf strain in the first ten minutes to see Melbourne take a 0-14 lead at the half. The guys got back into the game at 10-14 with an attacking scrum five meters out in the last minutes but a screwed scrum saw the Unicorns go the length of the field to score and win 10-19. 3rds get a another chance to make the Grand Final as they play Box Hill this weekend.
4th Grade was the most unlucky team. After drawing 10-10 with Souths they dropped out of the finals as the lower placed team. Leading 10-0 at the half, Souths scored two second half tries to tie it up but Quins had a penalty late to win it but the kick went wide.
The women played Melbourne in their final game of the season going down 43-24 with only thirteen players on the field. They will play Melbourne again this weekend in the Semi Final.
