Under 16

Round 2 for the U16's against arch rivals Melbourne proved a big test for the team. With a change of grounds and the weather conditions fantastic, the Quins were desperate for a win. The first half saw Melbourne run in two early tries as our defence struggled. The team rallied together and with the defence improving gave us a number of key turnovers. The forwards stuck to their game plan and with patience saw Sam Blowers score mid through first half from a rolling maul. Melbourne struck straight back with run from the opposite wing. Quins kept persisting through their forwards and a well timed pass from Matt Callaway saw Callum Taylor bust the line just inside Melbourne's 22m to score under the posts with Taine converting for the extra 2 points. The first half saw Quins trailing by 3 Points.

The second half started at a hectic pace, with the team stepping up to the challenge. Rather than being on the back foot, the team started really taking the game to Melbourne. Through hard work from Sam Blowers, Koli, Nic, Charlie and the support of the other forwards, saw the Quins progress up the field phase after phase, with each hit up getting over the advantage line every time. With the opposition forwards tiring and out of position Matt Callaway seized the opportunity crossing the try line for another well deserved 5 points. Mid way through the second half, after a great turnover from Nic Roosten, saw the ball moved through the back line into the hands of inside centre Atu, straightening on the line and beating 3 defenders and with his lethal pace scored under the posts to take the lead out to 11.

From the restart Quins again work tirelessly with possession constantly swapping saw numerous tests for both teams discipline. Melbourne went wide from a Quins mistake and scored in the corner.

Late in the second half as Melbourne's discipline started to falter, the Quins forwards backed themselves with a set piece from a line-out just inside Melbourne's 22m. With confidence and belief, Quins steadily moved forward towards Melbourne's try line with a solid rolling maul, a last minute dive for the line by Sam Blowers touched down for a well deserved second try. Taine converted the extra 2 points.

With Melbourne tiring and Quins really putting the pressure on, Atu saw the chance again to break their defence, with a slick side step he once again broke the line, scoring under the posts to put the game out of reach for the Unicorns!
A great performance by the whole team!

Under 14 MAROONS

Michael Byrne reports that we all woke up knowing it was going to be a difficult game against Wyndham City. This was the first game of our season and I would like to say welcome to all the new boys to the club and those boys who have come up from U13.

This was a tough game against possibly the best team in the league. We started off quite well and kept them under pressure but they managed to break through towards the end of the halve and score some tries. As a result our structure went and our heads started to drop.

The second half did not really get any better but we did manage to score a try, through Justin and this was a result of great team pressure.

I will like to personally nominate Jacob for his great tackling, Nick for his all round performance and thank Luca, who played really well for his first game of rugby.

Thanks to the water boys Tom, Seb and Mitch.

Thanks you to Chris for turning up late. Its always helpful having a late coach!!!!

Oh and thanks to James for running the touch which gave us a point!

Final Score

  • Wyndham 56 - Harlequins 5

Under 14 Blues

It was a tough day for the U14 Blues in their game against Box Hill.  The score, to be honest, was awful and it was a defeat that will not be forgotten soon.

I want to talk to you about the positives.  Even though we were played the entire game down a player (we only had 12 - and for one stretch eleven players on the pitch), the boys NEVER gave up.  They did not get down on themselves or their team-mates.  The coaches support for us was always positive and encouraging and helped us to focus on improvement.

The Quins try was scored by Henry off a quick tap and go.  He was supported in his effort by many other players and this energy from the whole team was seen throughout the game.

Close towards half-time Dylan unfortunately rolled his ankle and couldn’t play for part of the second half.  Much to everyone’s appreciation, he played on and gave it his all when he came back on.

The captain for this match was Matt and he did exceptionally well at controlling the team and making everyone play to their best.

Thank you to all of the school boys who played right after their school game.  Their effort to get to the match was appreciated by everyone.  We would like to acknowledge Bob for refereeing the game and Gary, our manager, for dealing with a difficult situation.

Once again a big thank you to all of the boys who played and we will see you at training this week.

UNDER 12

I thought the game went well shutting down their space when they tried to dominate us with their structured play. Our forwards did their job really well especially when they ran with the ball. Our support play both in the backline and forwards was awesome. I think we have to work more on the scrum and supporting isolated players.

We did really well on defines being able to keep them scoreless. We did really well in attack especially when we ran the ball and we broke  a lot of tackles.  Also our backline did well running straight with the ball.  That probably 50% of the plays we scored tries. Overall we played a good game of rugby, teamwork is the strength of our team. I hope we will play well against Endeavour Hills this Saturday.

Go Harlequins. Lets do it. Thanks to Matt for Refereeing the game for us!

U11 MAROONS (Wed 6/5)

Tonight we played the Blue Quins Team.  They had a really good game but we had a better one - we won 43 - 19.

Great tries were scored by Nicolas, Patrick, Issy, Jozef and Hugo from the under 10's. Blair kicked four conversions.

We have improved a lot since we started, especially our clean outs, scrums, and tackling. The coach said we had a really good game and played well.
